At home with the Hyaenas – with cubs nursing and playing

Spotted or Laughing Hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) are common in sub-Saharan Africa, and often use road culverts as their den. Hyaena females are dominant over all males in the clan, and are highly protective of their cubs, which they nurse for 12-16 months, even though the cubs eat solids at three months. This Hyaena clan had their den in a culvert on the Satara-N’wanetsi Road in Kruger National Park. At least two females had cubs, and they allowed each other’s cubs to suckle them, which seems unusual. The cubs harassed a muddy male Hyaena, then nursed with their mother. Another female had a single cub that began nursing from her after chewing a leafy branch. The first female then appeared with her two cubs and began nuzzling the feeding cub. For much of the time the Hyaenas were making their excited “laughing” calls.
