Cape Town protesters gather on beach to voice anger at COVID lockdown rules
Scores of protesters today (January 30) deliberately broke South African lockdown rules by gathering on a beach in Cape Town.
Police and law enforcement officers chose to withdraw from the scene despite initially walking onto the beach with riot shields.
Brent van Der Westhuizen from a biker group called "Ride To Freedom" said they were supporting the protest which was organised by a group calling itself "Woke Nation".
South African president Cyril Ramaphosa took the country back to Level 3 lockdown regulations at the end of December as COVID-19 infections spiked in the second wave.
All the city's many beaches have been closed since then.
