Car swept away in Portland, Dorset after tidal surge breaches flood defences

This is the moment a parked car got swept away on the Dorset coastline following a tidal surge.

Local resident Nikki Souster captured the surprising scene from her front porch as flood defences at Chesil beach on Saturday evening (January 30) were breached and swept the parked car, which was empty, across Brandy Row.

"Oh, it's just taken someone's car straight across," Souster can be heard saying in the video.

"The sea overtopped the flood defences on Chesil beach," she told Newsflare. "Video taken safely from my front porch."

The Environment Agency said: "Sea spray overtopping is forecast along the coast as a result of high tides and strong winds."

"Flooding to roads and properties is possible at these times, however conditions may apply one to two hours either side of the high tide."

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and roads as large waves could be dangerous. Owners with property flood resilience equipment should install it now."
