A common warthog sow was seen wallowing in the north-eastern area of South Africa's Kruger National Park.

Footage shows the hog covering itself in mud before using rocks and logs to scratch itself in what the filmer described jokingly as "beauty treatment."

The filmer said: "Warthogs love wallowing – it cools their skin in hot weather as well as helping them get rid of ectoparasites such as ticks when they rub the mud off on rocks or logs."

The footage was filmed in November 2011.

The Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a member of the pig family – its name refers to the ‘warts’ on its face. Warthogs have two pairs of tusks that protrude from the mouth and curve upwards, as well as a mane of coarse hair running down the spine. Warthogs are the only pig adapted to savanna and are omnivorous, taking a wide range of foods including fresh grass, roots, fruits, insects and even carrion. This sow had just finished wallowing in a muddy roadside puddle at Crooks Corner in the north-east of Kruger National Park. She then systematically rubbed the mud from her body using fallen logs as her scraper.
