The Verreaux’s or Giant Eagle-Owl (Bubo lacteus) is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and is the largest African Owl. These Owls have soft grey plumage, and extraordinary bright pink eyelids! Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls are opportunistic predators, and eat mammals, birds, large insects and any other suitably-sized prey. These huge Owls normally roost in large leafy trees during the day, usually leaving the roost to hunt at dusk. We were surprised to find this immature Eagle-Owl on the ground in the morning near Redrocks Waterhole in the northern section of Kruger National Park – it was catching and eating Eastern Olive Toads (Sclerophrys garmani). The toads were calling and mating in the Redrocks drinking trough, occasionally leaving the water. When a toad left the trough the Owl often pursued and caught it, then ate it.
