STORYLINE:
Former Manchester United player Marcos Rojo will officially become a Boca player and will thus add the fifth team to his career.
The 30-year-old defender has just added a few minutes during his recent stints between Manchester United and Estudiantes de La Plata.
The player who played the 2014 and 2018 World Cups with the Argentine team underwent a medical examination yesterday accompanied by Raúl Cascini and Marcelo Delgado, members of the Boca Soccer Council.
After going through this process at a medical center in Barracas and being greeted by a group of fans, it was agreed that he would be formally presented today at La Bombonera, the Boca stadium.
Rojo signed on Monday afternoon the bond that will unite him to Boca for two years, with the option of extending it for one more.
After emerging in Estudiantes de La Plata, Rojo emigrated to Spartak Moscow in Russia for the 2011/12 season. He did not last there for a long time and in mid-2012 began his time at Sporting Lisboa, which marked his final take-off. However, the 2014 World Cup was the break for him: he shone with the Argentina shirt as a starter in six of the seven games of the runner-up team and Manchester United acquired his pass weeks later in exchange for a figure close to 20 million euros.
His passage through the Premier League, after all, was not as he expected: some injuries conditioned him in the fight for a position beyond that during the first seasons he accumulated quality matches.
During the last three years, and regardless of his presence at the 2018 World Cup in Russia (he played 3 out of 4 games), Rojo added to his statistics 27 matches with the Manchester United first team. It is not a minor detail that in mid-2017 he suffered a ligament tear in his left knee.
In the middle of his extensive history with the English team, he had a brief return on loan by Estudiantes de La Plata that was marked by the irruption of the pandemic, but also by a tear that prevented him from adding more games regardless of his only presentation with Estudiantes on this second stage: February 17 at 1-2 against Defensa y Justicia.
“When I found out that I was going back to Estudiantes a few months ago, I said that it didn't matter how long this return lasted and that I just wanted to enjoy the happiness that being home again generated for me. I swear I was happy", he wrote on his networks in August 2020, marking his farewell to the club that saw him born.
Faced with this context, Miguel Ángel Russo's intention is that in the afternoon –after this official presentation in the morning– Marcos joins the squad to start training immediately.
During the last days, in front of the different versions that were positioned with doubts about his physical situation, a photo of the footballer was known that shows the good condition of him today.
Rojo arrives in Boca to compete in the position with the pair that today is consolidated with Lisandro López and Carlos Izquierdoz, although it could also be an important piece in the left lane that currently accumulates more doubts than certainties with Frank Fabra and Emmanuel More like options.
Anyway, Boca adds an elite player who, if he manages to regain his level, will undoubtedly be one of the great figures of the Argentine championship and will collaborate so that Boca goes after his great obsession: adding the seventh Copa Libertadores to his showcase.
