Watch those horns! Male Waterbucks fighting.

The Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope found across sub-Sharan Africa. As their name suggests, Waterbuck live close to water where there is an ample supply of grass for them to eat. The species name ‘ellipsiprymnus’ refers to the large elliptical ring on the rump. Waterbucks secrete an oily, musk-smelling substance when sexually excited. The odour is so unpleasant that it is thought to repel predators, as well as waterproofing the coat. Only males have horns and are territorial. These evenly-matched males were testing each other’s strength, locking wickedly sharp horns as they pushed against each other. Neither was injured in this fight, although sometimes fatal wounds are suffered.
