Helmeted Guineafowls (Numida meleagris) are large, chicken-sized game birds with a bony casque on the head and blue and red facial skin. They are common throughout their range, often occurring in large flocks that roam the African savanna, eating grass seeds and digging for invertebrates and tubers. Guineafowls and other birds are often attracted to fresh Elephant dung, which they rake over with their strong feet, looking for softened seeds and insects such as dung beetles and their larvae. This pair of Helmeted Guineafowls were having a great time, scratching through a large pile dung deposited on the road by an African Savanna Elephant a few minutes earlier.
