Victims of the Siege of Sarajevo's Markale Market massacre on February 5, 1994, have been honoured exactly 27 years later in a day of remembrance in the Bosnian capital today.

Footage shows many laying wreaths and others paying their respects with prayers.

The initial Markale massacre occurred in the homonymous market, which was the busiest in Sarajevo at the time when a mortar round hit the bustling shopping area killing 68 and wounding 144.

This second Markale massacre occurred 18 months after, killing 43 and wounding an additional 75.

The attack was perpetrated by the Bosnian Serb Army, who contested the responsibility but The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia concluded that the shells were fired from a Serb position.

Family members of the victims, survivors, numerous delegations and citizens of Sarajevo paid tribute to their loved ones and fellow citizens who lost their lives at the Markale market on Saturday afternoon, February 5, 1994, from a grenade fired from aggressor positions around the city.

The first of two massacres at the Markale market, in the very center of Sarajevo, took place on February 5, 1994, between 12:10 and 12:00, when a 120-millimeter mortar projectile fired from the Republika Srpska army position in the village of Mrkovici fell on crowded city market.

The busiest Sarajevo market, Markale, was one of the places to supply the inhabitants of the besieged city during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At that place, trade in food products and everything that could in any way serve the citizens of Sarajevo to survive the hard days of war was carried out.
