Paralysed Indian man devotes himself to cleaning plastic from lake
A 69-year-old man who is paralysed below the knees has spent the last six years cleaning plastic from a lake in the Indian state of Kerala.
NS Rahappan from Manjanikkara lost use of his legs aged five after a severe bout of polio.
With no wheelchair, he's forced to use his arms to get around.
Despite these difficulties, Rajappan is on a mission.
Every day he hauls himself into a boat which he hires on Vembanad lake and paddles around collecting plastic bottles and other waste.
He's able to turn a very small profit from the work by selling the cleaned and dried plastic to a local buyer for 12 rupees (0.16 US dollars) per kilo.
Rajappan's efforts were recognised recently by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech on the radio.
