A woman shot in the head during an anti-coup protest in Myanmar capital died on Friday, according to multiple reports.

Mya Thwet Thwet Khine, who recently turned 20, had been in a critical condition since last week when police tried to disperse protesters using live rounds.

Distressing eyewitness video shows the woman, who was dressed in a red T-shirt and wearing a helmet, being struck and falling to the ground during the protest.

A hospital in Naypyitaw confirmed her death at 11:00 local time (04:30 GMT), according to reports. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, reports said.

During a protest in Myanmar, a 19-year-old woman from Naypyitaw gets shot dead in the head with what is said to have been a live bullet fired by Myanmar police on February 9.

In the deeply distressing footage, a woman wearing a red shirt and a motorcycle helmet is seen falling to the ground after shots are fired.

Although early eyewitness reports claimed that she died at the scene, later reports suggested the woman survived and is critically ill.

The protesters threw stones as the police used water cannons and, according to the filmer, live ammunition to disperse the crowd.

Citing a local doctor, Human Rights Watch reported that police shot a young woman in the back of her head and wounded a man in his chest at a protest in the capital, Naypyidaw. "Myanmar police should immediately end the use of excessive and lethal force against people protesting the February 1, 2021 military coup," the organisation said on Wednesday.

The harrowing incident happened after ceaseless protests following a military coup in the southeast Asian nation.
