Pelicans mistake Cormorant for a fish - then realise their error.
Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is the most isolated city in the world. The city surrounds the iconic Swan-Canning Estuary, Perth’s treasured waterway. The Estuary supports large numbers of waterbirds, including Australian Pelicans (Pelecanus conspicillatus), Little Black Cormorants (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) and others. Sometimes several species of waterbirds combine to form fishing parties when a large school of fish appears, and a feeding frenzy occurs as the birds compete to catch a fish. On this occasion the fishing party was comprised mainly of Little Black Cormorants and Pelicans. In their haste to catch a fish, two Pelicans grabbed, then dropped a Little Black Cormorant from their beaks before realising their mistake and moving on. The Little Black Cormorant involved seemed unharmed after its ordeal.
