Taming Of A Junk Yard Boerboel Guard Dog - Friends At Last After Years Of Hatred
After 8 years of viciousness from my neighboring South African Boerboel Junk Yard Guard Dog, I finally discovered what a lonely, angry, unforgiving, junk yard dogs likes. I finally reached her with warm greetings, attention, communication, physical contact, familiarity, some cookies here and there, and I think most important of all... finding out what she likes.
She's a guard dog for an Italian pizza storage facility which happens to border my home. From the first 5 seconds of meeting this dog through the fence, she has tried biting me; snarling, growling, and full of hate. There is no dog I don't like but I was unable to establish a safe relationship with her due to her aggression. I had a male St. Bernard that would always fight her between the fence so I was never able to establish a relationship with her until my dog died. I got another St. Bernard and she was better behaved so I decided to tame this junk yard dog to me so I was not in fear all the time.
Some may consider this teasing, but I'm one of a few humans this guard dog sees on a regular basis and feel I've enriched her life just interacting with it. Besides, this dog loves what it does. Just like some people live off adrenaline, this dog lives for defending her territory. That's why she's there. That's what she was bred for.
Being a French language dog, she has learned a few English commands from me. She comes to me when I ask if she wants her neck scratched and always up for a ball toss.
I've bonded with her since recording these videos and she no longer acts aggressive toward me. Bonding with any animal is no secret. Besides doing the obvious, discover what makes them happy and share it with them freely. It even works with humans :) In Mrs. Vicious case it was scratching's and tennis balls.
It took me about 6 months to get to this point; working with her about 4 times a week, taking a small bit of my lunch hour at home and after work. I did not try before that because my other St. Bernard (who died) would fight her between the fence, so I would keep him away. My current St. Bernard is not as provocative as he was.
People ask... Why? Why bother them, why interfere, why must you be involved. The answer is simple. Because.
I don't see myself as a mere observer in this world but part of it. I get involved with everything around me; especially regarding the living. I care. Apathy was not why God placed me here. Enriching the lives of animals enriches me.
My moto: "Feeding The World--- One Animal At A Time." Sometimes use "Sharing The World..." and "Saving The World..." All depends on what I do when confronted with the living.
