Anti-crime protesters in Bishop Lavis blockade area and clash with police

Residents of the crime ridden community of Bishop Lavis on the Cape Flats started blockading entrances to the township at 5am in protest against high levels of crime, gangsterism and drug addiction in the mostly poor and working class neighbourhood.

Riot police and Cape Town Law Enforcement officers used shields and stun grenades to push the crowd back when they attempted to stop early morning traffic on Valhalla Drive.

Chris Nissen from the South African Human Rights Commission came to monitor police actions at the protest and urged the police and community to engage peacefully
