Muslim residents in the historic Bo Kaap community hosted mass prayers in the street to pray against the threat of gentrification of the community as the community tries to keep property developers at bay.

The community is home to South Africa's first and oldest mosques which were built by slave ancestors of the current residents. The area was formerly known as the Malay Slave Quarter.

The community is currently opposing new developments in the neighbourhood and is appealing to the national government to declare the area a heritage site.
