The community of Bo Kaap in Cape Town hosted a mass Iftar (breaking of fast during Ramadan) in the streets of the historic community to protest against the threat of gentrification.

The community is seeking to highlight the threat gentrification poses for the community as result of new developments and skyrocketing rates and property taxes. The community consists mainly of muslim descendants of slaves brought from the east during colonial times. The community is home to three of the first and oldest mosques in South Africa. The area was known as the Malay Slave Quarter during colonial times.

Osman Shahbodien, Chairman of the Bo Kaap Ratepayers and Civic Association, says the City of Cape Town is making it impossible for people to continue living in the area and that they failed to remove residents during apartheid and are now once again trying to remove them with higher rates and taxes.

Shakira Dramat, a young Bo Kaap resident, says the Bo Kaap community is being bullied by the City of Cape Town and the community is angry at the injustices.
