Hong Kong has begun administering COVID-19 vaccines to the public on Friday (February 26).

Residents over 60 years old and heath care workers are being prioritised as the Sinovac jab is being rolled out.

On 26 February 2021, the first "Community Vaccination Center" opened in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, to inaugurate the vaccination campaign with the Coronavac vaccine of Sinovac Biotech, the Chinese company. Its arrival in Hong Kong was plagued with complaints of lack of transparency on the approval process of the vaccination and fragmentary data on its phase III clinical trials and its lack of efficacy (reports from Brazil put its efficacy rate at 50.4%, or barely above the minimum threshold of World Health Organization for approving a vaccine).

Despite this, a small queue formed at the Kowloon Bay sports center upon its opening. Dr. Kenneth W.T. Tsang, of Hong Kong Medical Consultants, a firm designated to handle the innoculations expressed the hope that the vaccination campaign would lead to a normalization of the situation in Hong Kong. Pr. Thomas KS Wong of the Hong Kong College of Nursing explained the setting of the vaccination centers. Dr. Tsang further added that the goal was not to vaccinate the entire population during the six months of existence of the community vaccination centers, but rather to vaccinate a majority of the population at risk.

On the same day, Mr. Patrick Nip, the Civil Service Secretary announced that three community vaccination centers dedicated to the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine would be repurposed to distribute the Chinese vaccine "because we notice that there’s an overwhelming response and many people would like to get vaccinated early so we respond to this demand and make the arrangement as best as we can". The arrival of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine in the city has been affected by several delays, despite its being approved before Sinovac's vaccine.
