Residents continued to protest in Yangon despite heavy police resistance as the unrest against the coup grows.

Footage from Friday (February 26) shows hundreds of protesters occupying the side of a road as police forced monitor from a distance.

A large number of protesters were seen brandishing banners that read "release our leaders now!"

According to reports, police forces fired warnings shots as they attempted to disperse the protest.

Police clashed with protesters as violence continued to escalate in Yangon, Myanmar, today (Feb 26).

The unrest, which saw live ammo fired to disperse crowds, came almost one month after the military ousted former leader Aung San Suu Kyi from power and seized control of state operations.

On Thursday there were clashes between pro-military supporters and protesters, with one man being stabbed.

The death toll from the protests is unclear but human rights groups have expressed growing concern and supporters of the civilian government have branded the military's tactics 'state-sponsored terrorism'.

Protests have erupted across Myanmar after the army detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi and seized power on February 1. The Nobel Peace Prize Laurette has not been seen since and concern is growing for her welfare.

International pressure on Myanmar, still known as Burma, with the U.S. government warning of sanctions on the country.

Burma was governed by Britain from 1824 to 1948, during which time it became the second-wealthiest country in Southeast Asia but following independence was ruled by the military until 2011 when democratic reforms began. It changed its name to Myanmar.
