Peatland fires rage through Indonesia's West Kalimantan province

Drone footage reveals the extent of haze as a result of peatland fires in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province on Saturday (February 27).

On-the-ground footage also shows the blaze, which locals said had spread to a nearby school.

The local municipal government described air quality in the provincial capital Pontianak City as "very unhealthy," according to one local report, and detrimental to humans, animals and plants.

Although Indonesia has laws in place to protect peatland, the fires are often deliberately started to clear forests for palm oil plantations. Such fires can burn for longer and produce more smoke because the fires are on peat land.

Much of West Kalimantan's land area is made up of peat and mangrove forest.
