A rare sight is Chinese freighters at 'The Golden Triangle' on the Mekong river. According to the Mekong River Commission, water levels this year are worrying, due mostly to dams reducing outflow.
Hydrometeorological data from the MRC shows the river level at Chiang Saen, where this video was filmed, at 1.83 metres on February 16 and at 2.147 metres on February 28. Some monitoring stations downstream are indicating levels of under one metre. The current dry season is expected to have little impact on the river's water levels. Agriculture and fishing are being adversely affected.
Japan has pledged 2.9 million USD (Feb 26,2021) to the MRC to promote responsible development in the region. Last year Japan gave 3.9 million USD for flood prevention.
