Siqalo and Mitchells Plain residents clash during service delivery protest
Mitchells Plain and Siqalo residents clashed after Siqalo community members blocked Jakes Gerwel drive in protest against the City of Cape Town not delivering basic services to the informal settlement.
Riot police were called in to quell the violence and pushed back crowds from Siqalo with tear gas and rubber bullets. Mitchells Plain residents also threw stones at the Siqalo protesters, claiming they were affected by the blocked roads, causing them not to be able to get to work.
A fruit and vegetable vendor had his entire structure torched and lost all his stock. The vendor has been trading on the same site for more than 15 years.
