These Matabele Ants (Megaponera analis) are fearsome predators in the African bush, with columns of ants swarming along the ground or in low vegetation. The worker ants hunt their preferred termite prey which are consumed by the colony members. These ants construct or occupy temporary underground nests that contain hundreds of thousands to millions of worker ants. This column of Matabele Ants was crossing a sand road in the northern part of Kruger National Park – the larger ants are soldiers and the smaller ones workers.
