Hundreds of buildings collapsed after 6.3-magnitude earthquake shakes central Greece
After a strong earthquake of 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked Greece, this footage from Damasi shows the fallen building and people trying to relive their life on March 4.
Locals in the village of Damasi in the Tirnavos area of Thessaly had the misfortune to be only a handful of kilometers next to the seismic activity epicenter. Church Agios Nikolaos in Koutsochero village of Larissa lies in rubble after the strong vibration (01:38 timestamp). Church Agios Dimitrios of the village Mesochori in Elassona had the same fate, (05:40 timestamp) as the bell tower of the church has been torn to pieces. Fearful of returning to their homes, thousands of people in central Greece were spending the day and night outdoors after the powerful earthquake.
Authorities are informing residents to stay out of their homes while tents were set up at a nearby football field by Greek army forces and civil protection.
"I live here in Damasi village for 50 years and I have never seen such an earthquake in my life. We were inside the house when the earthquake started, we tried to get up and run out but we fell down, it was so intense. The authorities tell me not to enter my house but my husband is sick, he receives chemotherapy, where should I go?" says a woman on-camera (05:05 timestamp).
The primary school in Damasi also suffers great damage and cracks, students were evacuated immediately thanks to their teachers and school warden. Teachers kept their cool and the pupils stuck to the emergency drill, and everyone got out okay (02:53 timestamp)
