A foundation in Makassar, Indonesia, uses fly larvae to process food waste into organic fertilizer.

The Director of the Peduli Negeri Foundation, Saharuddin Ridwan, explained that black soldier flies will lay eggs and these maggots then begin eating the food waste.

Eventually, the remaining food waste is transformed into fertilizer used for other crops.

The older larvae are then used as food for livestock and pets.

It was explained that, in the city of Makassar, this method had only been developed by involving people at the Peduli Negeri Foundation, and it turned out that many appropriate technologies had been implemented in the city of Makassar. This is an extraordinary alternative because all the leftover food that is produced every day can be processed by these maggots.

Also explained about the cycle of maggots. Namely starting from the BSF (black soldier Fly), then these flies marry 3 to 5 days and produce eggs. Furthermore, they become baby larvae, and the leftovers are placed for consumption so that they become adult larvae. Adult larvae will eat leftovers, then will become flies.

Through maggots, they will help in processing organic waste. So that organic waste can be an alternative fertilizer and food for livestock and pet advertisements. (*)
