In a flap: COVID-19 forces rural chicken farmers to offer birds at bargain prices

Faced with ruin from COVID-19, rural chicken farmers have begun driving their birds to Vietnam's cities and offering residents bargain prices.

The farmers are calling these "rescue sales" which allow them to at least stay afloat, even if they make a loss.

Every day dozens of trucks loaded with poultry arrive in Hanoi and park in busy areas hoping to offload the birds they can't sell in their local provinces.

With chickens going for half their usual price, these flash sales are proving a hit.

Long queues of agitated customers lining up behind these poultry vehicles are now a common sight on the streets of Hanoi.

The cut-price birds have even caused traffic problems as scores of bargain hunters have begun parking up near the poultry trucks, blocking roads.
