Housing activists build shack outside Premier's official residence on Mandela's birthday

Housing activists built a shack outside Leeuwenhof, the official residence of Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, to protest the conditions under which shack dwellers in Cape Town live. The protesters starting building the shack around 5am and the structure was erected and standing in less than 20 minutes.

Police arrived at the scene after the structure was erected. The protesters continued singing and dancing while police observed from a distance. The protesters gradually left the scene, leaving the structure in the middle of the road, causing a disruption to morning traffic.

The activists said the shack was a gift to Helen Zille on Nelson Mandela's birthday.
