A giant mosaic made of cans was built in the food court of the Canal Walk shopping centre in Cape Town in remembrance of Nelson Mandela who would have turned 100 today. Every year Mandela Day is celebrated by millions of people throughout the world to honour the legacy of the late statesman and anti-apartheid icon.

Annually on 18 July, millions of people donate 46 minutes of their personal to charitable works. The 46 minutes are derived from Mandela's prison number 46664. The anti-apartheid icon was jailed for 27 years by South Africa's apartheid government and passed away in 2013.

Paul Adams, a former South African cricket player and now the coach of the Cape Cobras cricked team said the lasting legacy of Mandela should be used to give back to communities.

Denver Apollus, station manager for the Heart FM radio station, the media partner for the event, said he had met Mandela on several occasions and that Mandela's legacy represents freedom to both him and his family.
