Female protesters tear down fences of the National Palace in Mexico
A group of hooded women tore down metal fencing set up in front of hte National Palace in Mexico City on March 8.
At least an hour before, thousands of people arrived at the Plaza de la Constitución, to mark International Women's Day, planning a march identified by the hashtag #8M.
The feminists chanted: ”Yes it could! Yes it could! Yes it could! " and “A rapist will not be Governor”, when the fences fell, while elements of the Athena group set up a fence with shields to prevent the passage of the protesters.
Footage from the scene shows the protesters continue to try to tear down more parts of the metal wall, and in their attempt to enter the presidential headquarters, they sprayed gasoline on the shields of the Athena group elements, which are behind the metal fences placed in the National Palace.
Minutes earlier, the hooded women used stones and hammers to tear down the fence that covers the Palace of Fine Arts. However, inside the fence that protects the enclosure, there are police elements who fire pepper spray at the protesters.
Elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City eventually repelled the female protesters with tear gas.
For its part, the capital's SSC reported through its Twitter social network account that at least 15 police officers and 4 civilians have been injured during the demonstration. Moments before, feminists tore down the fences that were placed to protect the Glorieta del Caballito and the Banco de México (BANXICO) building on Reforma avenue.
