Markus Jooste, the former CEO of retail company Steinhoff International, testified before parliament to provide clarity behind the massive financial collapse of the group in December 2017 which cost investors more than 180 billion rand.

Jooste arrived at parliament with two advocates and two attorneys. Francois Van SC and Jeremy Muller SC, were briefed by attorneys Callie Albertyn and Salome Van Zyl to represent Jooste legally.

Jooste appeared before parliament based on an agreement beforehand which allowed him not to answer any questions which could potentially be used against him in any future civil or criminal proceedings.

Jooste was mobbed by journalists as he left the hearing but refused to answer any questions. He was swiftly escorted out of the building by his legal team and bodyguards.
