Customs officials seize gold, electronic goods worth $90,438 from airport in southern India
Air Customs officials seize smuggled goods worth Rs. 65.7 lakh (USD 90,438) from southern India's Chennai International Airport on March 11. The suspect was intercepted at the terminal of the airport.
Visuals witnessing the smuggled items feature three bundles of gold paste wrapped with black adhesive tape. Following this, several cases of iPhone, AirPods, apple watches, apple power adaptors, Samsung galaxy watches, and cartons of cigarettes can be seen lying amid other illicit items. Moreover, the officials also recover a molten chunk of gold from the accused.
A 42-year-old passenger, identified as Raja Mohamed of Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Sharjah by Indigo flight 6E-8245, was intercepted at the exit. On further examination, three bundles of gold paste weighing 1.23 kg (2.7 lbs) were recovered from the rectum. On extraction, 1.12 kg (2.4 lbs) of gold valued at Rs. 52 lakh (USD 71,580) were retrieved and seized.
Furthermore, on the search of his check-in bag, seven iPhone 12 Pro, 12 AirPods Pro, 10 apple watches, 12 apple power adapters, six Samsung galaxy watches, and four cartons of Dunhill cigarettes worth Rs. 13.7 lakh (USD 18,858) were recovered and seized. Moreover, the accused was arrested shortly after this incident.
A total of 1.12 kg (2.4 lbs) of gold worth Rs. 52 lakh (USD 71,580) and other smuggled items valued at Rs. 13.7 lakh (USD 18,858) were recovered and seized under Customs Act. Furthermore, an investigation into the matter is underway.
