Despite police warnings and the coronavirus rules stating people must not gather in groups in England, a vigil for Sarah Everard was held in Nottingham city centre this evening at 18:00.

Organisers of the event posted on social media following the decision to cancel the London vigil saying “This is a grassroots action. In line with anarchist principles, care and solidarity for each other is our number one priority - we know we cannot depend on the state for our safety” the post ended in saying “We do not expect nor want police engagement. We are safety first. However should police attend, perhaps they too have sorrow for murdered woman, attendees should not speak with them but direct them to the police liaison, No Gods, No masters. We are all leaders of ourselves”. Large anti lockdown protests and gatherings in the city in previous months have prompted arrests and fines.

The vigil was organised on social media by Nottingham people's assembly and Nottingham woman for change and took place at the Brian Clough statue in Nottingham city centre. Police were seen eventually asking people to leave and at one point an argument broke out between the organiser and a member of a Communist political group who tried to put a banner up. The organiser was seen using scissors to cut the banner down.
