A hotel with a built-in polar bear enclosure has received criticism from animal rights activists after it opened for full bookings in northern China.

The video, filmed in the city of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province on March 12, shows the polar bears living in an enclosure with artificial ice and a small pool of water.

Tourists are guaranteed an around-the-clock view of the polar bears from the 21 hotel rooms.

The hotel is part of the Harbin Polarland theme park which was fully booked on its opening day, March 12.

However, the hotel has drawn criticism from netizens and animal rights groups.

Jason Baker, senior vice president at PETA, told Reuters: "Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes in aquariums and certainly not in hotels."

A netizen on Weibo, a Twitter-like social media, said: “It is so sad that animals are kept in enclosures.”

While another netizen commented: “I recommend them to dine in a zoo directly.”
