Unusual Hippo behaviour – grazing in the bush in broad daylight

Adult Common Hippopotamuses or Hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) grow to massive sizes – between one and two tonnes (2,200 to 4,400pounds). Hippos are one of Africa’s most dangerous animals because of their unpredictable and aggressive nature, and their huge canine teeth. Hippos spend most of the day in water shallow enough for them to stand in, occasionally emerging to bask on sand banks, particularly on overcast days. Hippos usually leave the water at dusk to graze on short grasses, eating around 68 kilograms (150 pounds) in a night. We were surprised to find these two huge Hippos grazing during the day close to the S92 road that runs along the edge of the Olifants River in Kruger National Park.
