Customs officials seize foreign currency worth $25,128 from airport in southern India

Air Customs officials seized foreign currency worth Rs. 18.25 lakh (USD 25,128) from southern India's Chennai International Airport on March 24. The suspect was intercepted at the terminal of the airport.

A video features an official opening of two trolley bags in which the items are being smuggled. Following this, she discovers foreign currency ingeniously concealed within the inner side fittings of the bags and seizes them on the spot.

A lady, identified as Vasantha of Kanchipuram, was intercepted after she had cleared immigration and was proceeding to board FlyDubai flight FZ8516 on suspicion of carrying foreign currency. Moreover, on further interrogation, she became anxious, so her personal belongings, including her hand trolley bag and check-in trolley bag, were taken up for examination.

Following this, USD 18,500 in the denomination of 100 and 840 Kuwaiti Dinars in the denomination of 20 were found concealed in the inner side fittings of her trolley bags. The foreign currency was valued at Rs. 18.25 lakh (USD 25,128) and was seized under the Customs Act read with Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) Regulations. Furthermore, an investigation into the matter is underway.
