Indian women gather at bonfires to pray and perform rituals for Holika Dahan

India's famous Festival of Colours, Holi, has numerous rituals and celebrations associated with it outside of the main event on Monday 29 March.

On Sunday 28 March women and families gathered around bonfires to pray and perform rituals for Choti Holi, also called Holika Dahan, which leads into the biggest day in the Festival of Colours, Rangwali Holi.

People celebrate Holi by playing with with colours. It is a Hindu festival, but is celebrated by people all over India, irrespective of their religion. It is preceded by Holika Dahan/Choti Holi.

Celebration of Holi is considered as an end of winter and arrival of spring. It is also celebrated as victory of good over evil.
