Locals in Halkidiki, Greece, are fearing a potential earthquake after the tide in the region has remained low for almost four weeks.

The sea has receded tens of metres at Fteroti beach meaning fisherman cannot moor their boats.

Residents in the area have theorised that long-lasting low tides are linked to earthquakes and they are fearing a natural disaster.

Mr. Giannis, who lives in the nearby village of Sozopoli, said: "I have lived here since 1985 but I have never seen this phenomenon on such a scale.

"Look at the sea, it has been pulled in too much. This low tide has pulled in the sea at least 50 meters in some places.

"It is a very unusual thing, I do not consider it normal, it is something that has never existed in the area, not like this."

The inhabitants of the areas of Halkidiki Greece have been facing an eerie spectacle lately. The phenomenon of strong low tide remains evident in several parts of Halkidiki for almost four weeks.

The waters from the beautiful beaches almost disappear, especially in the morning. At Fteroti beach in Sithonia, the sea is tens of meters away from the point where fishermen can moor their boats.

In Nea Propontida municipality the images are also impressive as the seabed is now outside the sea. Similar images exist on several beaches of Halkidiki. Residents have been observing the phenomenon since the beginning of March. What is striking is that it goes on for so long, something that worries them.

"We have never seen anything like this," say residents watching the sea rise tens of meters from the shore.

Locals express fears of an impending major earthquake as a strong low tide phenomenon remains in Halkidiki Greece and the waters receded up to 50 meters from the shore.

After an extremely low tide phenomenon, the seafloor became dry and came to the surface as the waters receded considerably. Residents were taking pictures of the phenomenon with their smartphones while this rare phenomenon has never been observed again on such a scale.

Mr. Giannis is living in the village of Sozopoli in Halkidiki for over 35 years, (timestamp 01:58) "I live here since 1985 but I have never seen this phenomenon on such a scale. We did not have all this length on beaches, I can clearly see now a new coastline has emerged."
