Skilled workers thatching a rondavel in Kruger National Park

In Kruger National Park the majority of the rondavels and other major buildings in the rest camps are thatched with Common Thatching Grass, Hyparrhenia hirta. The building of thatch roofs is a specialised skill that involves ensuring that the rafters and supporting lathes and battens are suitable and properly installed, that the thatch is properly harvested and free of loose material and seed heads, and the primary roof pitch is 45 degrees or more. In Kruger Park eucalyptus poles treated with creosote are used, and tar-treated sisal twine is used to bind the thatch to the laths. These skilled African men and women were working together to re-thatch several rondavels in the Satara Rest Camp - with no safety harnesses in use!
