Farmers threw away the tomatoes they cultivated after incurring heavy loss in central India's Madhya Pradesh on April 1. The incident took place in Raisen district.

A video features tomatoes floating in a canal after the farmers toss them away. Moreover, they hurl the vegetables onto the streets, pits, and several places while the buffaloes grazing in the area feeds on them. Furthermore, the enraged farmers take this decision as the traders are not buying the tomatoes from them.

Tomatoes were cultivated in large quantities in the district, but as they were not getting a proper price for their products, they decided to toss them away as they were rotting away. Moreover, the farmers could not recover the cost of growing the crop as 22 kg (48 lbs) of tomato carats were being sold for Rs. 40 (USD 0.55) in the district due to a decrease in their demand.

Farmers used to transport these products in large quantities in various cities of North and South India from Raisen. Moreover, due to the increase in the rainfall, the prices of the tomatoes had increased in the past, so the farmers cultivated more crops this time to get some profit. But unfortunately, they were unable to find traders or buyers when their crops were ready for harvesting as the local farmers in North and South India began to cultivate tomatoes.

A farmer, identified as Akram, has been cultivating tomatoes in the district for about 14 years on a 15-acre land. However, he incurred a loss of over 6 lakh (USD 8,176) due to a sudden decrease in demand. The same happened with another farmer named Surendra Kumar Tiwari, who has been farming for about 12 years. Furthermore, the government has encouraged them under the Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Industry Upgradation Scheme for setting up some processing units.
