Picket in Tallinn in support of arrested human rights activist Sergei Seredenko, Estonia
This footage was filmed and produced 5 April 2021.
On Monday, April 5, a picket "in defense of the rights and freedoms of human rights activist Sergei Seredenko" took place in Tallinn. In early March 2021, the Estonian Security Police arrested the well-known human rights lawyer Seregy Seredenko on suspicion of anti-state activities.
Voice in the background:
[0:19-0:21]
"We can't even write letters to him!"
Mstislav Rusakov, Chairman of the association " Russian School of Estonia", Tells in more detail about the current situation:
[0:22-0:52]
– Sergey Nikolaevich Seredenko is our friend and comrade so we can't leave him
so this picket is necessary to draw attention to the problem that human rights defenders in Estonia can stop their activities, put them in prison, and not explain anything to anyone. That is, we didn't know anything at all.
Therefore, it is necessary to make it clear that the Russians do not abandon their own, and we have gathered in order to keep him. And so that this lawlessness does not become something of a mass nature.
One of the protesters, Oksana Post, states the follows:
[0:53-1:18]
– In general, I protest against the fact that our state is turning into a police state, in which our rights are no longer respected as ordinary free citizens. we can be arrested on any suspicion. It turns out that any person can be put in prison for nothing. I would like our state to be a state of law after all, and I do not want it to turn into a police state.
Mstislav Rusakov:
[1:24-2:18]
– Well, we don't know anything about the charges at all, because he is charged with article 235 , paragraph 1, which refers to assisting in the commission of crimes provided for by another 6 articles. There are 6 articles in which the text is completely different, so we do not know what he is even accused of. At the same time, the cases are anti-state, they are called so. They carry a certain secrecy, so they do not say what is really there. And the practice is such that even when a sentence is passed, it is marked "secret" for 50 years. We won't know what happened until 50 years from now, and no one will be alive. Most likely, this is just an attempt to settle scores with him for his human rights activities, for fighting against the negative phenomena that exist in Estonia: against discrimination and everything else. The state does not like it and they decided to close it, plus to intimidate everyone else.
[2:23-2:46]
– In this case, I would demand not so much an open trial, which is also important, as a change in the measure of restraint. So that he is not kept in custody for 2 months, as is now assumed, but released on his own recognizance not to leave at least. Because Sergey is not a person who will do something, run away somewhere. Therefore, it would be quite possible to make him a recognizance not to leave.
[2:52-3:48]
– This is not a question of effect: we are doing this not only for Sergei, not so much for Sergei, but for ourselves, because people have gathered here who believe that this is completely unfair and we are expressing our protest here. It is difficult to say how much this will help Sergey. In my opinion, I do not quite share the position of the lawyer, who believes that if we are silent, everything will be fine. I think that, after all, this problem should attract mass attention and we, as the Russian school in Estonia, have made an appeal to a number of human rights organizations, such as the OSCE Commissioner for Human Rights and so on, to attract attention. It seems to us that the only thing that affects Estonia is attracting attention and attracting international attention, not only within Estonia but also abroad. First of all, the EU, the UN structures, the European Council.
[3:54-5:26]
In other countries of the European Union, this is put, I will not say that on the stream, but there were such cases. This is Latvia and Lithuania, when people are arrested on incomprehensible charges: either espionage, or inciting ethnic hatred. Well, Gaponenko, for example, spent 4 months under investigation, his case is still not finished. He was accused of inciting ethnic hatred when he expressed himself not very complimentary towards American tanks. And they decided that it is bad to talk about American tanks is inciting inter-ethnic strife. That is, such far-fetched accusations are being made in the Baltic states and Lithuania. in Estonia, in this regard, it was more or less calm. And here it is directly concrete-anti-state activity. If we consider this concept broadly, then any human rights activity is anti - state. Because the state violates human rights, and human rights defenders fight against the state that violates these rights. This is absolutely normal. But here they are trying to incriminate that there was some kind of foreign presence, foreign attention. It is difficult to judge something specifically, but if you take an analogy, for example, with Ukraine, Belarus, there is no foreign interference at all hidden, in relation to those people who organize the Maidan and everything else. If this is such a convenient article in Estonia, then, in principle, in Belarus, Lukashenko can arrest the entire square under this article and give 6 years in prison. This is very strange. But it's hard to say yet, because we don't know anything. And there is a fear that we will never know at all, because such cases are made secret.
The crowd chants:
[5:27-5:35]
"Freedom to Sergey Seredenko!"
