Thai bars were sprayed with disinfectant today (April 8) following a surge in Covid-19 cases from the capital Bangkok.

Hundreds of cases in recent days have been traced to nightclubs in the upmarket Thong Lor area with health officials claiming it is the British strain.

The cluster has lead to sweeping closures across the city with bars and entertainment venues in 41 provinces across Thailand now set to close tomorrow.

In Chiang Mai, in the north of the country, a showdown order for bars was announced today (April 8) following the infection of four policemen who went to a mini-concert at The Consul’s Garden and a celebrity who visited Tha Chang Cafe.

More than 150 police who were at risk of infection were tested for Covid-19 and later quarantined. Officials said that 36 new cases identified in Chiang Mai were linked to a cluster from bars in Bangkok and they were closing the city’s bars to stop a further outbreak.

Danai Sarapruek, Director of Public Health Promotion in Chiang Mai, said: ‘This new wave of Covid-19 is a cluster from bars and other entertainment venues.

‘We are concerned about the travel during the traditional Songkran New Year’s holiday period so, we would like to ask everyone to plan carefully and strictly follow the Ministry of Public Health’s preventive measures.’

Thailand’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today (April 8) announced 405 Covid cases in the last 24 hours.

Those coming from the Thong Lor bars were claimed to be the highly contagious British variant that was found in the family who returned from the UK in January.
