Bars and massage parlours were closed again in Bangkok today (April 9) following a flare-up in Covid-19 cases.

Footage shows strip clubs and brothels in the capital with their shutters down and doors locked following an order by health officials to close all entertainment venues for 14 days in 41 provinces across the country.

Ministers hope the move – the third shut down since the pandemic started in March last year – will stifle a new outbreak of infections which was traced to upmarket bars and clubs in Thong Lor district of the city.

Health workers from the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) claim that the new infections in Thailand are linked to the highly contagious coronavirus variant B.1.1.7, also known as the British strain.

Officials reported 559 new cases today (April 9) and one death. They said 549 of them were local infections and 10 from people arriving from abroad.

Thailand has now reported a total of 30,869 cases of Covid-19 and 96 deaths.
