The 2021 Peruvian general election was held on 11 April 2021. Trade unionist Pedro Castillo has taken a surprise lead. With more than half of the votes counted, Mr Castillo had 16.3%. Eighteen candidates competed in the first round and the election looks certain to go into a run-off on 6 June in which voters will have to choose between the top two candidates.
The video shows streets and avenues of the Peruvian capital the day after the presidential elections. Citizens queuing at banks, public transportation, entering the city's train system. You can also see newspaper covers with the preliminary results that give the first place to Professor Pedro Castillo.
