Students at the University of Medan Area have made an alcohol-free hand sanitiser that can be used by Muslims celebrating Ramadan.

Many sanitisers being sold contain alcohol meaning Muslims cannot use them when worshipping. A group of university students decided to solve this problem by making sanitiser using organic products.

The substance is made using lemon water, clove, lemongrass and betel which are then marinated in demineralised water.

After being refrigerated for seven days, the sanitiser is packed into spray bottles and handed out to the community for free.

Students of the faculty of science and technology, University of Medan Area, North Sumatra, Indonesia created a hand sanitizer from organic ingredients that can be used to worship in the Holy Month of Ramadan. Hand sanitizer will be distributed to the congregation of the Geratis mosque.

During the COVID-19 pandemic citizens outside the house often use hand sanitizer to prevent the virus from spreading. But many hand sanitizers that are being sold in the market contain alcohol, so they can’t be used for worship and are harmful for the skin. To solve this problem students created an organic hand sanitizer made of lemon water, clove, lemongrass and betel.

All the ingredients are cut into small pieces and marinated in a demineralized water, that is put in the fridge, for 7 days. Then all the liquids are combined together, put in spray bottles and are ready to use. This is very affordable.

According to medical observers the material created for hand sanitizer is believed to kill germs and viruses. Mass production of this hand sanitizer is planned to be distributed in the community for free.
