Footage shows COVID-19 patients being treated at a newly-built field hospital in northern Thailand following an outbreak of cases in the country.

The warehouse with 1,000 beds was built to accommodate patients who tested positive for the coronavirus in Chiang Mai province. Many of the infections are linked to outbreaks from entertainment venues including nightclubs and bars.

Health chiefs said an additional 319 COVID-19 cases were reported in the province on Wednesday (April 14), taking the total number of infections there to 1,579 since the pandemic started.

There were 1,335 cases across Thailand today – a record high – taking the total number of infections in the country to 34,575.

Chiang Mai health chief Dr Chatuchai Maneerat said hospitals would reach full capacity if daily cases continued to be above 200.

He said: ‘There are 1,000 beds in the field hospital and that may not be sufficient so the communicable disease control panel has decided to add another 1,000 beds.’
