Locals hurled cow dung at each other as part of festivities in Andhra Pradesh, southern India.

Footage shows the villagers chucking the lumps of dung at each other in the streets of Aspari on April 14.

This festival is said to usher in the next year with the dung cakes being made a month ahead of the procession.

Locals celebrated Telugu New Year, Ugadi, uniquely in southern India's Andhra Pradesh on April 14. The incident took place in Kairuppala village of Aspari Mandal in Kurnool district.

A video features a large crowd gathering at a spot to celebrate the festivities. Following this, they take out a procession of Lord Veerabhadra Swamy and donkeys while a man is spotted sitting on top of it. Moreover, they begin to hurl cow dung cakes on one another as part of a tradition to celebrate Ugadi.

The villagers divided into two groups and hurled cow dung cakes at each other when a procession of Lord Veerabhadra Swamy was taken out. The people usher in the New Year with Pidakala Samaram as part of which they fight by hurling cow dung cakes on each other. The dung cakes were made a month ahead of the festivities.

However, folklore has it that when Veerabhadra Swamy, a Lingayat, wanted to marry Kalika Devi, a woman from the backward community, a violent clash occurred between the two communities. However, the issue was settled by the village headmen, and the marriage was solemnized. The tradition continues even now as the village elders sit to perform the marriage of Veerabhadra Swamy and Kalika Devi, but not before the fight in which cow dung cakes are hurled.
