Electric boats began services last November on Bangkok's Klong Phadung Krung Kasem, a canal 5 kilometres long from the main railway station, Hua Lampong, and linking with the Chao Phraya River.
The eight fibreglas boats can each carry thirty passengers and a wheelchair. They have twin propellers and can travel at between 10 and 15 kilometres per hour for 4 hours on a single charge. Each boat is also equipped with twelve solar panels. The fare is twenty Baht (40 pence) one way.
An initiative of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the aim is to replace polluting vehicles and improve air quality.
