The Western Cape Premier's office together with officials from the City of Cape Town held a press conference to update the media and residents on the efforts to combat the devastating fires which started on Sunday. Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, wished to commend Arlene Wehr, the first woman of colour to be appointed a divisional services commander within the City's fire and rescue services. Premier Winde commended Wehr and her teams as well as all the support staff.

Wehr said the operation still had two Oryx and two Huey helicopters active in combatting the fire. She said the helicopters were currently active in the areas around Devils Peak and the University of Cape Town.

JP Smith, the Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security, stated the main area of risk currently is Vredehoek, where residents were evacuated yesterday morning. He said the firefighting teams were now mainly focused on ensuring there are no further flare ups.
