Footage shows government officials patrolling streets warning residents to stay inside due to rising Covid-19 cases in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Tuesday (April 20).

The city has enforced a strict 8pm – 5am curfew following a surge in infections in recent weeks. Cambodia has now recorded 7,444 Covid-19 cases and 49 deaths as of April 21.

Prime minister Hun Sen warned the country was ‘on the brink of death’ and placed two million people across Phnom Penh and Ta Khmau in lockdown. Thousands of hospital beds have been set up in wedding party halls and schools.

Neighbouring Thailand has also seen a similar spike in cases following an outbreak at upmarket strip clubs and bars in the Thong Lor area of the capital Bangkok.

They have been suggestions that the cluster is due to Thai dancers being shipped across the border to work in casinos catering to wealthy Chinese in the city of Sihanoukville.
