A hungry wild elephant reached into a coffee shop with its trunk in Thailand.

The jumbo passed by the small cafe along the road while looking for food near the tourist camping site in Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province on April 18.

Footage shows the animal reaching into the shop’s small window to check for something to eat.

Park ranger Wallapa Saekang said she was about to buy a morning drink but the shop appeared to be busy with their giant customer.

She said: ‘I wanted to buy some coffee while patrolling the area but the shop was busy. It was an amusing start of day.’

Wallapa added that the jumbo was gentle with its trunk and did not damage anything as if it had done the same thing before.

She said: ‘The elephant was so clever. It did not damage anything and seemed like it was only trying to find some food without harming anyone.’

The jumbo eventually returned to the forest after failing to find something edible at the shop without leaving any damage.’

Elephants are the national animal of Thailand. An estimated 2,000 elephants are living in the wild and a similar number in captivity.

In the wild, they roam through the deep jungle and in the country’s protected national parks but often encounter humans on roads and in villages. However, they are protected by laws and killing them carries a maximum prison term of up to three years and a fine of 1,000 baht (25GBP).
