Spectacular, huge female African Golden Orb Weaver spiders on their webs

Buy video

The numerous species of Golden Orb Weaver spiders are found in warmer parts of the world. They are named for their impressive golden webs that are strung between vegetation or built structures to catch their prey that includes a wide range of insects, including large grasshoppers and cicadas. The strong webs sometimes catch small birds and bats, but it is unclear whether they are eaten by the spider. The African Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila senegalensis) is also known as the Banded-legged Golden Orb-web Spider. Nephila senegalensis is common and widespread throughout sub-Sharan Africa. These huge, brightly-coloured female Orb Weavers had made their webs on the railings of the Letaba River Bridge in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Much smaller male Orb Weavers can also be seen in the webs, and unlike the males of other spider species are at low risk of being eaten by the huge female.
